The Beauty and Artistry of Zellige Mosaic Tiles

Some materials simply cover a surface. Others transform it. Zellige mosaic tiles firmly belong in the latter category.

Traditional Moroccan Zellige tile arrangement

These handmade Moroccan tiles are a medley of texture, pattern, and color. They’re a power player that can make a subtle or strong statement, creating spaces that feel layered, storied, and alive. The really beautiful thing is that no two installations are ever exactly alike.

Whether used as a statement-making kitchen backsplash, a spa-like shower surround, or an intricate feature wall, zellige mosaics offer something beyond decoration. They bring a story to a space — a timeless connection to authentic artisan heritage that fits right into modern design.

In this guide, you’ll learn why zellige mosaic tiles are so distinctive while gathering design inspiration for how to use them in your own home. You’ll also read about practical tips for installation, cleaning, and maintenance, plus where to find the best mosaics for your next project.

What Are Zellige Mosaic Tiles?

At Otto Tiles & Design, we like to say that zellige tile (pronounced zeh-leezh) is crafted by both hand and soul. That’s because this Moroccan artisan tile is shaped by the hands of master artisans using traditional methods. The natural clay is kiln-fired and individually glazed, often giving it a shimmery radiance, although some types of zellige are unglazed for a more matte effect.

Mosaic (meshed) zellige tiles combine small pieces of zellige tile in varying sizes to create a beautiful geometric design and rhythmic composition. Otto Tiles & Design specializes in a range of signature mosaic collections featuring unique shapes and styles, from trapezoids and octagons to stripes, squares, circles, and more. They’re absolute eye candy!

Where to Use the Zellige Mosaic Tiles

In interior design, zellige tile is incredibly versatile, and that goes for zellige mosaic tiles, too. You’re really only limited by your imagination. Not only do zellige mosaic tile designs work for multiple styles, but they’re also suitable for a variety of spaces, both inside and outside your home, including:

  • Walls (even ones with underfloor heating)

  • Floors

  • Backsplashes

  • Wet areas like showers

  • Fireplace surrounds

  • Pools

Design Inspiration for Zellige Mosaic Tiles

Start daydreaming about your space and get inspired by these creative ways that designers and homeowners alike have tapped into the transformative power of zellige mosaic tile.

Border Control

There’s no better way to establish a beautiful border than with zellige mosaic tile, and the Marrakesh Stripes in Paprika are reporting for duty in this gorgeous primary suite. The tile runs along the perimeter and the shower, establishing a colorful framework for this layered space.

One mosaic certainly wasn’t enough in this primary suite, as the Colorful Mosaic Zellige also turns a shower into a statement piece in the same bathroom (see slide 4). We love this space because it quickly proves that you can absolutely mix and match mosaics, too. The options are nearly endless.

Walls That Talk

There’s no need for wallpaper when you have these Marrakesh Stripes in Pistachio mosaic tiles. This dreamy space pairs soft green tones with timeless brass details for the ultimate jewel-box bathroom.

Minimalist Moment

Sometimes a touch of mosaic tile detail is all you need, and this kitchen proves it. The Border Zellige is a finishing touch to the backsplash. The tonal color and subtle texture create just the right amount of visual intrigue in this serene space.

Pretty in Pink

This petite bathroom packs a pretty punch with its pastel palette that’s reminiscent of saltwater taffy. The Marrakesh Stripes in Sea Salt tiles bring a perfect balance of heritage and modern design here.

Raising the Bar

This outdoor bar is serving up all the swagger, before a cocktail is even shaken or stirred. The mosaic tiles — Marrakech Stripes in Espresso — deliver a pattern of both rich and delicate tones, transforming this nook into a destination experience.

Floored!

If you’ve been dreaming of floors that feel both playful and timeless, look no further than Terracotta Gray Octagon Zellige mosaic tiles. From cozy kitchens to breakfast nooks, and more, a statement floor like this one is enchanting yet effortlessly livable, especially when layered with natural textures, curved furnishings, and a palette of muted pastels.

Monochromatic Magic

Lest you think all mosaics have to be in a spectrum of colors, they can be just as impactful in monochromatic neutrals. The Zellige Circles tiles invite extra textural allure and elegance because they are a more minimal take on mosaic.

Zellige Mosaic Tiles Installation

Otto Tiles & Design’s zellige mosaic tiles come with a mesh backing, making it easier for a do-it-yourself installation. But they can still be challenging to install, even for a seasoned weekend warrior with some prior experience.

That’s why many people choose professional installation to ensure the best possible result. (And meshed mosaic zellige tiles reduce installation costs by up to 60-70%!). At Otto Tiles & Design, we can work with you to find an expert installer who specializes in zellige tile's intricacies.

If you are interested in installing your own tile (and have the energy and time to invest in the project), here are some installation basics and some pro tips to follow.

DIY Zellige Mosaic Tile Installation Tips

To Prepare for Installation:

  • As with any tile project, you’ll want a good foundation to lay your tile. So, make sure the tile substrate is level, clean, dry, and free of oil, dust, and debris.

  • If you’re using zellige mosaic tiles in a wet area — like a shower or a pool area— apply a suitable waterproof membrane.

  • If you have underfloor heating, make sure to turn the system off at least 12 hours before tiling begins to avoid any unwanted temperature fluctuations on the floor.

Pro tip: Consider ordering at least 15% more tile than your measured area to account for cuts, onsite layout selection to accommodate color and tone variation, and potential breakage (or mistakes!).

To Install Your Zellige Mosaic Tiles:

  • Make sure to use a flexible, high-bond adhesive that’s not just appropriate for the substrate but also for zellige mosaic tiles.

  • Install the mesh panels of zellige mosaic tiles with minimal spacing, ideally no more than 0.11 inch (1 mm), or following the exact spacing of the meshed tile layout. Because these handmade tiles are not precisely formed, there will always be small, irregular gaps between them, which must be filled with grout later.

  • Apply a double spread (two layers) of adhesive. Using two layers of adhesive will give you greater control over the positioning of the zellige mosaic tiles. The adhesive or mortar should be about 0.1 inch (3 mm) thick. This allows you to achieve a pleasing surface without sharp edges. You can apply the adhesive to the wall, floor, and tile.

  • Use a diamond-blade wet saw to cut the tile, placing the tile face up. Make sure to wear protective eyewear.

Pro tip: Blend meshed zellige mosaic tiles from different boxes to account for the color variations inherent to their beauty. This will ensure that the overall effect is more seamless, with tiles of similar hues not all located next to each other.

To Grout Your Zellige Mosaic Tiles:

  • As the spaces between the tiles are tiny, you should use a very liquid and runny grout. A flexible, fine grout, such as Mapei Ultracolor Plus, is a good option. Always test grout on a small area before proceeding with the full application.

  • As you start applying grout, it’s best to work diagonally across the tiles in small sections of 21.5 to 43 square feet (2 to 4 square meters).

  • Don’t let the grout sit on top of the tiles. Wipe off the excess with a soft cloth or sponge and clean water.

Pro tip: If you notice slight gaps and edge variations in your mosaic tiles, that's not wrong or an installation mistake. It’s a natural and expected part of zellige, and all part of its beauty.

To Seal Your Zellige Mosaic Tiles:

  • Use a high-quality penetrating sealant, such as Stonetech Impregnator Pro Sealer or Miracle 511 Porous Plus.

  • Always follow the sealant manufacturer's instructions and test on a sample tile.

Pro tip: Unglazed zellige mosaic tiles must be sealed both before and after grouting. Glazed zellige mosaic tiles do not require sealing.

Zellige Mosaic Tile Care and Maintenance

The proper care for your zellige mosaic tiles is vital to ensure they continue to look their best year after year.

For regular, routine cleaning, use a soft cloth or mop with a pH-neutral detergent. Avoid using any harsh chemicals, bleach, or acidic cleaners, as this can strip and dull the luster of zellige. And definitely avoid using any machine scrubbers or abrasive tools.

It is always wise to test any other cleaning methods in an inconspicuous area of your installation.

Pro tip: Annual resealing of zellige tiles is recommended for high-traffic surfaces, showers, and other areas constantly exposed to water.
